Starting Salary:  
$73,025/yr. Certified Police Officer, less than two years
$80,771/yr. Two or more years of full-time sworn Police Officer experience

Maximum Salary:         $88,000

Officers hired may be reimbursed for costs up to $5,000 for Police Academy costs incurred.

DUTIES (Not All-Inclusive): Responsible for protection of life and property through enforcement of laws and ordinances. Patrols assigned areas, investigates and makes arrests, directs and controls traffic, writes violation tickets, prepares reports, appears in court, provides service and assistance to public, performs related work as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS – All requirements must be attained by the closing date of the announcement unless otherwise stated below. Those who meet these criteria will be invited to an oral interview. Virtual (Zoom)interviews may be available upon request for special circumstances.

Open Competitive and Promotional Applicants

  1. Must meet the following MCOLES standards. Any applicant who fails to comply with these requirements shall become ineligible (certification must be maintained throughout the term of the eligibility):
    • Currently certified or considered “certifiable” by MCOLES standards OR
    • Currently enrolled in a MCOLES certified Police Academy, MCOLES Military Police Basic Training Program, or Police Certification Program with a projected graduation date no later than June 1, 2024 and provide proof of same AND
    • If required, MCOLES Recognition of Prior Basic Training and Experience Program must be successfully completed by date of hire.
  2. At least 21 years of age as of date of hire.
  3. Must be a United States citizen.
  4. Vision correctable to 20/20 with no major defects; normal color vision; normal hearing.
  5. Able to pass any physical agility test required to determine physical fitness for the performance of duties of position to be filled.
  6. Must possess 12th grade reading and writing proficiency as measured on the College English Placement Test or an exam similar in content.
  7. Education:
    • Associate Degree or a Bachelor Degree in any field, a minimum of 60 credit hours or 90 semester hours from an accredited college or university, or will complete an Associate degree or 60 credit hours upon completion of Basic Police Academy.
    • Recent satisfactory sworn Police Officer experience (within five years prior to closing date of announcement) may be substituted for years of college on a year-to-year basis.
    • Recent U.S military active duty experience (within five years prior to closing date of announcement; separation in good standing) may be substituted for years of college on a year-to-year basis.
    • Experience in private security, campus security, and/or reserves will not be considered. 
  8. No felony convictions.
  9. Valid Michigan Driver License with good driving record (based on City of Troy standards). Out-of-state applicants must provide current driving record at time of application and obtain State of Michigan license within one (1) month of employment.
  10. Empco Testing
    • Current licensed sworn police officers transferring from another agency are not required to take the Empco test.
    • All other applicants are required to take the Empco test and must have a current passing test score (at least 70%) at the closing date of this announcement. You must select “City of Troy” for the City to receive your results. Tests expired before the closing date will not be considered. Register with Empco at https://www.empco.net.  Test fees are the responsibility of the applicant.

EVALUATION PROCESS will consist of application review, background investigation, psychological evaluation, pre-employment physical and drug screen in addition to:

  • Open competitive and Promotional applicants: Empco written test (40%) and interview (60%).
  • Current licensed sworn police officers transferring from another agency: Interview (100%).
