POLICE OFFICER

The City of Warren is now recruiting for Police Officer.  To apply and be on the eligibility list you must meet the minimum requirements, complete the testing criteria, and complete the application process as indicated below.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Age 20 or older by the closing date for testing, which is December 1, 2025.
  • Possess a valid license to operate a vehicle in the State of Michigan with a good driving record.
  • United States citizen.
  • Must possess normal visual functions in each eye.  Possess 20/20 corrected vision in each eye.  Possess normal color vision.
  • Must pass a physical examination including drug screening and a psychological evaluation within the guidelines established by the City, as modified by current law.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Must pass a background investigation.

WRITTEN EXAM – MUST BE COMPLETED BY ALL APPLICANTS:

  • Must pass the written test administered through EMPCO Inc. within the past year with a score of 80 percent or higher, and the oral interview with a score of 80 percent or higher.  The written exam is worth 70% and oral interview is worth 30% of your total score.
  • Applicants must create a profile, register and take the written exam to be administered by EMPCO Inc. Go to https://www.empco.net/ to create a profile, register for the written exam and pay the exam fee.  Applicants must complete the online profile and take the written exam by December 1,  2025.
  • Upon successful completion of the FTO program, new hires will be reimbursed for the cost of the EMPCO, Inc pre-employment exam not to exceed seventy-five dollars ($75.00).

Experience Requirements:

  • Current police officer –OR- MCOLES certifiable (completed Police Academy) –OR- currently enrolled in an MCOLES certified police academy with a projected graduation date within 120 days of the application deadline –OR- have three years of active duty in the United States military with an honorable discharge or a minimum of four (4) years military reserve experience with honorable discharge or proof of honorable service. Original DD214 must be provided. Military veterans who meet this requirement may be sponsored in the police academy, providing they have passed the MCOLES reading/writing and physical agility test.

EEXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS – Must Have One of the Following:

  • Current police officer
    • Must provide badge and police ID at time of application
  • MCOLES certifiable (completed Police Academy)
    • Must provide proof of passing at time of application
  • Currently enrolled in an MCOLES certified police academy
    • Must provide proof of enrollment at time of application
  • Have passed the MCOLES reading/writing and physical agility tests.
    • Must provide proof of passing both at time of application.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent G.E.D.
  • Two (2) preference points will be added to a passing composite score of 80 percent at the time the eligibility list is certified for a Bachelor’ Degree or Higher Education in any field.
  • One (1) preference point will be added to a passing composite score of 80 percent at the time the eligibility list is certified for an Associate’s degree in any field.
  • Verified by original sealed transcript.

For Military Preference Points:

  • One preference point will be added to the passing composite scores of 80 percent on both the written EMPCO, Inc exam and Oral Interview Examination at the time the eligibility list is certified for veteran’s preference, for three (3) years active military experience with an honorable discharge or a minimum of four (4) years military reserve experience with an honorable discharge or proof of honorable service. You must provide an ORIGINAL Form DD214 or NGB22 to qualify.

  • Applicants who score 80% or higher on the EMPCO, Inc. written exam by the above deadline and meet Warren’s preliminary requirements can visit https://www.cityofwarren.org/jobs/ to view and print out the application. Applications can be turned in via in person, mail or fax.  Completed applications are due by December 1, 2025 by 5 pm to Human Resources.
  • You will sign up for oral board examination at the time your completed application is accepted. They will take place on December 3 or 4, 2025.

Benefits:

  • Current Starting Salary:  $70,764 – $95,000 (After 5 years) * Does not include contractual increase of January 1, 2026.
    • Lateral transfer available for those that qualify:
      • Those with 2-5 years of experience will receive year 2 wage.
      • Those with 5+ years of experience will receive top of scale.
