Introduction

Candidates for entry level positions in participating Michigan fire departments must complete a hiring process before appointment as a firefighter. This process can include, but is not limited to, written tests, physical ability tests, interviews, background investigations, drug tests, and psychological and physical examinations to determine the fitness and 'good moral character' of a candidate. While each department has developed a hiring process which meets its needs, most departments begin with a written and physical ability examination.

To assist departments and test takers, these tests are conducted at various locations. The results of these examinations are accepted by all participating fire departments in the state.

Not only will your scores be available to the departments of your choice, but your profile and contact information (address, phone, etc.) will also be available to the departments via a secure internet site. This means that departments will use this system to not only retrieve and verify test scores, but also as one of their recruiting tools. For some, it could be their only source of recruits for positions in their departments.

After you login, you will be asked to select departments. On the Department Selection page, you can view which physical ability exam each department requires – either the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), or the Basic Physical Ability Test (BPAT), or they will accept either exam, or they do not require any physical ability test. Based on this information, you can choose which physical ability exam you should select to take. At this time, Empco test sites do not offer the CPAT exam. If you have taken and passed the CPAT exam in the past 12 months, you must submit your documentation to Empco by following the instructions on the Information Page.

To appear on a department’s list you must have a current examination score at the time of a department’s deadline. Exam scores are good for one year from the test date.

There is a non-refundable fee of $75.00 to take a written examination. Cost for the Physical Ability Test vary by test type.

To schedule an entry-level examination, you must first register with us. After registering, you can schedule an exam. Once registered, you can return later to update your information, schedule additional tests, and review your test scores.
