Off-the-Shelf Examinations
Off-the-Shelf Examinations were developed after conducting a job analysis for each position and rank in law enforcement and fire services. These examinations are validated and used by a large number of departments nationally.

These examinations are job-related, reliable, and content valid. They are composed of 100 multiple-choice questions with four ABCD possible answers - one correct and three incorrect. Questions are taken from texts appropriate for the position/rank being tested. Different versions of each test are available. One version is based on national standards and textbooks, the others are specific to Michigan departments, etc. and includes questions about state law and practices. A bibliography (study guide) listing the texts from which all questions are authored is provided to test takers allowing them time to study for the examination. Scantron answer sheets are provided. Empco scores the examinations - usually within 2 business days.

Entry Level Exams
Empco offers departments two types of pre-employment exams for Law Enforcement and Fire Services Departments. The first type of exam is a basic ability exam. This type of exam measures candidates’ basic cognitive ability and behaviors. These are nationally validated exams designed to select candidates that have the cognitive skills that are predictive of success in a law enforcement or fire service job.

The second type of pre-employment exam is a job knowledge exam. These are used smaller departments that want to ensure candidates have the knowledge of the fire service or law enforcement that is taught at the academies. The exams include questions on things such as state law, field operations, and basic firefighting tactics.
