Written Exams for Law Enforcement and Fire Services

You will take a written examination that is developed, validated, and scored by an independent testing company. The examination we use is the Law Enforcement Candidate Record (LECR) produced by PreVisor. This examination is used nationally. It will test your skills in job-related areas including: verbal skills, short-term memory and perceptual skills, and includes a background questionnaire. The examination has been determined to be job-related, reliable, and valid. Empco will proctor this examination.

If you have taken this examination anywhere in Michigan within the last twelve (12) months, do not retake the examination at this time. On the online Application, simply check yes to the question: Have you taken the Law Enforcement Candidate Record Examination in Michigan in the last 12 months? The results from the last LECR examination you took in Michigan will be used. In this event, simply complete all the enclosed forms and submit to Empco. You may sign-up for your oral interview time/date by coming to the written test date and signing up as instructed below , or by calling on the first business day after the written exam.

If you have not taken the Law Enforcement Candidate Record examination in Michigan within the last twelve (12) months, you are required to take the examination at this time.
If you are unsure whether you took the examination in Michigan within the last twelve months, we recommend you take this examination at this time.

Entrance to the Examination
To be admitted to the examination room, you will be required to bring a Photo ID (e.g., Driver's License) or other legally acceptable picture ID.
You will be required to sign-in and give your fingerprint at the registration table. All materials required to take the examination will be furnished by Empco. You are not allowed to bring any aid of any kind (e.g., calculator, dictionary, etc.) into the examination room. No storage facility will be available to you. The examination will be conducted at Oakland University:

Directions to the Examination Site
Take I-75 to the University Drive exit in Auburn Hills, MI.
Go east on University Drive for about one mile.
Turn right (south) on Squirrel Road and go to the first entrance to the University - about 1/4 mile to Pioneer Dr.
Turn into the University on Pioneer Dr. and go about 300 yards to Library Drive.
Turn left on Library Dr.
As you go up the hill, Dodge Hall of Engineering is on the left, and Parking Lot 36 is on the right.
Park as far north in the lot as possible. Walk toward Dodge Hall, but do not enter the building at the first door.
Walk north on the sidewalk between Dodge Hall and the Library (about 50 yards).
Follow the sidewalk to the north entrance to Dodge Hall.
Room 201 is immediately to the right as you enter Dodge Hall.
If you arrive early, register for your oral interview.
