The Northville Police Department provides 24-hour police service in the City of Northville. The Department also provides dispatching service for the Northville Fire Department.
The City of Northville consists of about 2.2 square miles located in northwest Wayne and southwest Oakland counties. The City of Novi is to the north and Northville Township borders the southern part of the City. The City is primarily residential in nature. The "downtown" area for the Northville community is located in the City. Many visitors come to Northville to shop and dine at the many restaurants in the area. The City is also the home of Northville Downs. This harness horse racing track operates year round with simulcast programs and live racing from October through April. The estimated 1998 population of the City was 6,447.
The current Police Department staff allocation includes: Chief, 1 Captain, 3 Sergeants, 11 Patrol Officers, 1 Senior Clerk, 2 full-time dispatchers, 3-4 part-time dispatchers, and 8-12 part-time certified officers.
The primary Department operations include patrol and dispatch. The Department operates a part-time detective bureau wtth one sergeant being assigned to both patrol and investigations. Seasonal assignments include racetrack duty, bicycle patrol and D.A.R.E.
Full-time Patrol Officers and Dispatchers are members of the Northville Police Officers Association, which is affiliated with the Police Officers Association of Michigan. The current contract expires in June of 2000. Some of the benefits in the current contract include:
The Department requires applicants to have completed at least two years of college education. Applicants must have completed the minimum training requirements and be MCOLES certified or certifiable.
The City is a member of the EMPCO hiring consortium. The hiring of full-time Patrol Officer positions is done from the EMPCO eligibility list.
The Department uses certified Part-time Police Officers for many functions. The primary duties of Part-time Police Officers include assignments at Northville Downs, special community events, school activities and some limited patrol functions. The pay for Part-time Police Officers currently begins at $10.85 per hour. Uniforms are provided.
The Department does the hiring of Part-time Police Officers. Applicants must have completed the minimum training requirements and be MCOLES certified or certifiable. Those interested in this position should submit an applicant directly to the Police Department. Most hiring takes place in the late summer and early fall prior to the beginning of the live racing season, but vacancies frequently occur at other times of the year.
The Department also processes the hiring of both full and part-time Dispatchers. Applicants must have graduated from high school or completed the GED. The pay for part-time Dispatchers is $9.85 during the initial training period. After training, the rate increases to $10.85 with steps to a maximum of $14.43. The pay for full-time Dispatchers ranges from $11.85 to $14.43 with a benefit package similar to that provided to Patrol Officers.
