2002 POLICE OFFICER ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES
GENERAL
The City is establishing a ranking of potential certified or certifiable police officer candidates using a two-part examination consisting of both written and interview portions. If the candidate receives a passing score of 70 or above on the written section, he/she may then proceed to the interview portion. Both portions of the examination will be weighted equally, with a minimum score of 70 or above considered passing. These points are combined for a numerical rank order. Other employment requirements are listed below:
Candidates are then subject to a comprehensive employment review. After successfully completing the review, the Civil Service Commission will certify the top five candidates as eligible for appointment for one vacancy. If there are additional vacancies, one additional candidate will be certified for each vacancy.
ITEMS NECESSARY TO BE SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION
- A complete and signed standard City application.
- Certification or certifiable status as a Michigan Police Officer as established by MCOLES (Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards).
- Passing educational credits of 60 semester credit hours or equivalent quarter hours from an accredited college or university; these credits are awarded by an institution accredited through the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Associations or a similar regional accrediting body.
- U.S. Citizen, or eligible for police employment as set forth in immigration laws.
- l8 years of age.
- Valid Michigan Driver's License
- At the time of application as well as at the time of hire, must be maintained throughout employment.
- Additional driving record disqualifications
- Alcohol convictions.
- No more than 5 current driving license points, and not more than 8 cumulative points including suppressed in the last 7 years.
- No driver's license suspensions including suppressed due to moving violations in the last 7 years.
- No felony convictions/high misdemeanor convictions or suppressed convictions.
ADDITIONAL EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Successfully complete a comprehensive written and interview examination with a combined score of 70 with each individual examination weighted equally. Any candidate who took the exam in the State of Michigan during the last twelve (12) months should not take it again. The previous exam results will be used.
- Successfully pass a complete physical, including a comprehensive drug screening, and a psychological evaluation.
- Successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation to include but not limited to: credit, use of illegal drugs, professional/personal references, prior discipline, misuse of work rules, prior employment evaluations and any other MCOLES factor as set forth in their guidelines.
- Successfully complete the probationary period.
